The Bernadine
Columbus OH
currently under construction

The Bernadine was constructed as a small hotel in the 1920’s by a group of African-American entrepeneurs trying to attract more jazz entertainers to play at the adjacent Lincoln Theater; Columbus hotels were segregated at the time. Today, this historic building is in bad disrepair and is sited in a quickly revitalizing district in Columbus’ downtown area. The client was interested in reinterpreting the building as a series of loft-like condominiums.

Our solution is a mixture of two story, two bedroom units and two story one bedroom units, twelve units in total. The units feature living and kitchen spaces with nineteen foot high ceilings and highly efficient kitchens that integrate wall with the public spaces of the unit. A beautiful existing skylight-lit stair hall will be refurbished, and its detailing remain intact, linking the units together and with the street and private parking in the rear. The interiors of the units will contrast with contemporary detailing and aluminum cable railing.
