Private Residence
Upper Arlington OH

The project addresses a common challenge: the conflicting agendas and aesthetic tastes of a client and a neighborhood association.

The site is a narrow open lot in a sea of uniform, post-war Cape Cod homes. The extensive client program necessitated maximizing the buildable envelope on site, while working with a massing that could downplay the scale of the home and knit it into the existing neighborhood fabric.

The wish for a house made entirely of sustainable and highly energy efficient materials led us to the use of insulated concrete forms in tandem with unique integration of structurally insulated panels and conventional framing for the enclosure. The metal roof is planned for photovoltaic panesl and heating and cooling is handeled via a geothermal system. The entry doubles as a two story stone library, around which the open layout organizes itself. While the exterior plays good neighbor, the porch gives a hint at more contemporary detailing within.
